Afronerd Radio's Mid Week in Review

And just an aside, I'm sure some of our listeners have grown weary with our incessant railing against modern minstrel culture but just when you think that there might be a lull in its omnipresence...THINK AGAIN-

The above flyer serves as a harrowing example of how lower tier (lower register, below centigrade, lower case....whichever euphemism you prefer) folks with little imagination degrade the cultural landscape. It appears that this is real advertisement for a Tampa, Florida Halloween shindig with a twist.....heaven help us.

It's Sunday's Week in Review, Courtesy of Afronerd Radio, 7pm EST-Topics: Capt. Kirk's TV Debut on NY's Tiempo, Kadafi's Out!, I-phone Wars & More!

Good Evening, folks and welcome to another round of "afronerd-ism," thanks to the thematically named Afronerd Radio show. First off, we must give great praise to the one and only Captain Kirk who made an appearance on NY's Tiempo for his co-production cred on a documentary entitled, AIR: The True Memoirs of Gil C. Alicea. Air stems from a well publicized book, The Air Down Here which tells the riveting story of Mr. Gilbert Alicea's formative years in the South Bronx being reared by two HIV parents. The Captain, of course, will fill our audience in on the particulars of this project during tonight's 90 minute broadcast. And if that isn't heavy enough for you, there's always the remainder of the show! The topics to be discussed are: (finally) getting around to last week's Madame Noir blog's entry entitled, "Famous Black people We'd Like to Disown If We Could"; a young Mcdonald's employee is caught on camera involved in a melee with 2 female customers; a mother of 13 is brutally killed in a crossfire in front of a Brownsville, Brooklyn school by above ground thugs; Libyan leader, Moammar Kadafi is killed by a yankee fan (according to the NY Post); thoughts on the I-phone vs Android smartphone battle; the UK Misfits sci-fi series is getting an American makeover and lastly, MSNBC correspondent/civil rights leader, Rev. Al Sharpton defends filmmaker, Tyler Perry against alleged "proper Negroes." Remember, you can drop us a line, 'live" at 646-915-9620 or via email/instant message at afronerdradio@yahoo.com.

Opening at 7pm Tues ET-Check Our Comic Shoppe Show-Of Course NY Comic Con Reviews; Walking Dead S2; Gary Frank on DCnu Shazam & More!

Hey folks! We had a preemption of the show last week, but we HAD to make provisions and assurances for tomorrow's airing of The Comic Shoppe (courtesy of afronerdRadio.com) because of the arrival of New York's Comic Con this past weekend. So join Daryll B, Captain Kirk and yours truly as we discuss the convention and a plethora of pulp and pop culture related fare....why bother to delineate the topics...the Comic Con is where it's at! Call in live at 646-915-9620, leave a comment (or converse) in our chat room or contact us via email/instant message-afronerdradio@yahoo.com. Live long and prosper, Afronerd believers!

Oh and here's the latest blog entry by The Shoppe's Daryll B:

This year's New York Comic-Con was an experience to say the least. I had a lot more fun this year that in the past 2 years even though I saw less due to fan traffic. Here are 10 observations that I had over the 2 1/2 days that I spent at Jacob Javitz Center:

1) Again for all the ripping I did on DC's 52 Initiative, I can't deny that the editors and staff were not hustling around to get the word out. They graciously did interview after interview at their booth and before and after their panels.

2) This being said, it was IMPOSSIBLE to get into the Dark Knight Rises sneak peek screening(s). I would have had to skip out on other sections of the show. I did give it 3 attempts though....

3) I got into the Avengers Panel and screening though and if you can't tell, I am totally salivating over my keyboard. If Thor whet my appetite, this was a full blown tease. I can't wait for these 2 movies next year... and I even got into "The Thing" marathon and the new Gundam movie/series screenings...

4) I am sorry folks. I just can't get into CGI animation. I tried to sit through the Green Lantern showings and even though it sounds like the story is on point, my mind just can't process the blocky art especially after how crisp First Flight and Emerald Knights looked.

5) Speaking of being everywhere and crisp, Robert Kirkman was everywhere I turned also. Podcast row, Newsarama booth, CBR TV, Image Comics booth, heck I think he even got stopped exiting the building by a newscaster who thought he was a regular fan. Of course Kirkman turned that into a Walking Dead hypefest...

6) The premiere of The Walking Dead kicked all sort of a$$ BTW. I was glad that the first 10 minutes that I got to see on Friday were just the tip of the iceberg. Gripping and LITERALLY leaves you out of breath as if you had been running from zombies yourself. I knew what was coming from reading the book and STILL was caught off guard at the end.....

7) Sorry Folks, I got to speak with the people running the SyFy Network booth and wasn't able to get confirmation on dates for the Monday Mania shows' returns. I did find out that Haven has been renewed for another season for all my King fans out there.

8) I managed to complete my Dwayne McDuffie Marvel Collection with Beyond and The New Fantastic Four with Black Panther and Storm. I even got the FF: The Life Fantastic with his "My Dinner With Doom" story. Now can we get a Damage Control Ultimate Collection Marvel? On the DC side, I picked up (finally) Superman Birthright and although I missed out on The New Teen Titans Games, I did pick up their archive collection.

9) For my gamers, the rocking place to be was by the entrance where fans were playing Transformers: Fall of Cybertron across from where CAPCOM fans were playing Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3. You could literally hear the "ooohs" and "aaaahs" all through the convention area.

10) This convention was JUST like New York: just when you think you have seen everything, you catch something new. In a 45 minute span, I ran into Boomer from the old Battlestar Galactica, Chris Evans, WWE lifers Virgil and Ashley, porn stars from Vivid Entertainment, Fmr NY Mayor Dinkins, Ryan Sohmer and Joel Watson at the Blind Ferret booth which I literally stumbled into, a dude I thought was Robert Rodriquez, Jimmy Palmiotti, and Peter Cullen. And all of them were quite gracious with my black geeky a$$.

My thanks to them, Blind Ferret Entertainment, Comic Book Resources, SyFy Network, Marvel, DC, Image, Midtown Comics, the staff and volunteers at Jacob Javitz and most importantly, the fans from all over the world who answered my questions at the event. Yeah I am going to collapse now DBurt...so until next time AfroNerd Readers: Keep Fantasizing!

Now is not the time to be verbose, people! Keeping it tight and ever succinct, Afronerd Radio's Week in Review broadcast airs this Sunday at 7pm eastern standard. A Quick Preview-Culture Critic, Media Personality & Author, Toure Pays a Visit to Afronerd Radio-Next Wed at 7pm eastern!

It's always at the top of our list, here at Afronerd, to keep our listenership/readers fully abreast of all the "goings on" at our little operation. Don't forget to mark your calendars for what will undoubtedly be an informative, if not entertaining conversational ride. Culture critic and author, Toure will be stopping by next Wednesday (October 12th), to discuss his latest literary endeavor, Who's Afraid of Post-Blackness?: What It Means to Be Black Now. For obvious reasons, we had to reach out Toure since Afronerd represents everything that Post Blackness espouses.....expanding the boundaries for what can be defined as Black. You can listen to classic rock, propose conservative principles, collect graphic novels and watch vintage film noirs and not lose your Black authenticity card....hopefully. Check us out next week...

Hey! Check Out Our 2 For 1 Special! The Comic Shoppe on Tues & Afronerd Radio on Wed-Both Airing at 7pm Eastern-Discussing Pop, Politics & Comics!

Our apologies once AGAIN for Sunday's cancellation of our Afronerd Radio broadcast, but don't fret there's always The Comic Shoppe to pick up the occasional slack! Stop by tomorrow at 7pm at thecomicshoppe.com and listen to the usual cast of characters wax on about the following fantasy/graphic novel/sci-fi laden fare: our expectations for the upcoming airing of second season of The Walking Dead-will it eventually diverge from the comic or remain 90% "spot on?" ; more arguments (ahem, civil talk) about DC's 52 number ones-Did the Crises storylines ever occur and will we see the return of Earth 2?; and speaking of DC's 52, did Geoff Johns break Aquaman out of the character's alleged "corny" depowered state?; in video game news, Nightwing appears to be a DLC character for this month's release of Batman: Arkham City; Scotland's University of Dundee offers a degree in Comic Studies and lastly our latest and favorite graphic novel picks from last week.

And remember The Comic Shoppe is just our cyber entree! Pull up a chair this Wednesday for the Mid Week in Review edition of Afronerd featuring Captain Kirk (also at 7pm) and listen in on the rarely uneventful discourse. The call in number for both programs is, of course, 646-915-9620 and the topics on the table are: the passing of R & B songstress and classic hip hop label president, Sylvia Robinson; more speculation of a Black James Bond with actor, Idris Elba being a strong contendor; still more on Republican presidential candidate, Herman Cain (i.e. his belief that Dems have Blacks brainwashed; actress Janeane Garofalo's comments about Cain and Gov. Rick Perry's infamous camp name, etc); the occupy wall street protests and if time permits, Rush Limbaugh (the expert.....ahem)...on slave blood and authentic Blackness. Feel free to contact us via email or instant message at afronerdradio@yahoo.com...oh and least we forget....Sherri Shepherd's performance on The View is just troublesome:
