Like Harvey Dent's Coin-Two Shows Starting at 6pm Sharp! Issues: Fringe Finale; JJ Abrams Gets Star Wars; The Industry of Lying; The End of the PC & Daryll B's Latest Pulp Culture Blog

Hello to all our friends, fiends and consistent listenership! Welcome to another fact finding mission courtesy of the Double Feature/Grindhouse edition of Afronerd Radio. Check for Captain Kirk, Daryll B. and Dburt this Sunday at 6pm on The Comic Shoppe where we will deliberate on the following pop cultural issues: perhaps the biggest news to date-director, J.J. Abrams just signed on to direct the next Star Wars installment (so does this make him the HNIC-Head Nerd In Charge? Star Wars and Star Trek?); the gang finally dissects the Fringe finale; What is "phase two" (and three) of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and how does Dr. Strange fit in and NOT Black Panther? ; the Robotech live action gets a director and lastly, what would a proposed Quentin Tarantino directed Luke Cage film have looked like with Laurence Fishburne as its star?

And batting second, we have Afronerd featuring Captain Kirk airing after The Shoppe at 7pm. Join Dburt and The Captain as they wax on the following topics: Lying as an industry- with Lance Armstrong, Beyonce-gate and Manti Te'o being the new CEOs; American Idol gets sued for alleged racism toward 9 Black disqualified contestants; Brown vs Black in California-a Black family gets terrorized by a Latino gang and lastly, and does 2013 spell the end of the traditional PC? The commentators at Beast TV seem to think so. Call the hosts live at 646-915-9620.

Check out the latest blog entry, courtesy of The Shoppe's Daryll B:

Let me help everyone with this week's Afronerd LinkBlog. The ending of Fringe was just about perfect for me. I knew that all of my answers were not going to be answered in 1hour and 20 minutes... but I got glimpses of the alternate Earth, Olivia's powers returned briefly, a "noble" sacrifice, more guerilla fringe case uses, Broyles having his most bada$$ scene ever in the show, Peter using his brain, Astrid looking cuter as ever WHILE proving she can handle a pistol, another curious brain teaser between father and son.. AND the return of the cow! *Phew!* Now to the links....

-Leave it to Adam WarRock to take a major argument/topic we had on last week's ComicShoppe and boil it down to a blog with a 3-4 minute rap....

I can't believe my rants just got owned by WarRock AGAIN!

-Heidi McDonald's Comics Beat had a correspondent at The Black Comic Book Festival we were telling you folks on the last show.....

Mannnnn I am really regretting finding out about this so late.

-I know AfroNerd, Adam WarRock, and others don't know about getting into the series buuuuuuuuuut...

...as a long time Whovian, this...THIS! A million times over! All 11 incarnations of The Doctor... most of the companions... My senses will be going off the nerd scale into the red! Speaking of which....

Alex Kingston! Spoilers! So now Arrow is going to be must watch for her AND John Barrowman....

-To go along with my analysis of the Fringe Series Ender, Graeme McMilian does his own thinking into what characteristics ends a beloved series well....

I'm sure we all have our opinions as to which shows have pulled off the groovy landing but as usual, commenters have most of the controversial ones listed....

-Anyone got 5 million bucks laying around?

All I need it for are Fridays and Saturday Nights... You can rock it the rest of the week... Promise!

-Kelly Thompson compares Brian Wood's February all-female X-Men book to an attempt by Marvel made waaaaaay back shortly after she began "She Has No Head"

I trust Brian Wood's characterization and I think that Kelly's reasons here are solid. Either way, I am giving this book and Cullen Bunn's Fearless Defenders my money for the first arc at least... Speaking of Mr Bunn...

Congrats on the pilot being picked up by NBC Dude!

-Let me pull back the veil on one of the things we love doing behind the scenes at AfroNerd. We love reading articles in which creators get involved with fans about hot button topics. This gives you insight into motivations and passions of said creators....

So in this article we not only get Mark Waid's insight into his visions of Superman but we get J. Michael Straczynski's as well. Folks may not like the directions of the writers but you can see what each writer is shooting for with their Superman stories and how they see Clark Kent/Superman.

-A must have for all sci-fi fans....

go past the vampire rankings... below that you have a complete horror/sci-fi/fantasy release listing along with several of the trailers...-Old Article buuuuuuttttt.....

Especially noteworthy is CNN's slideshow of the most "controversial" books to hit the mainstream.... I think we can all name a few more that I guess fell a little short of the mainstream (Northstar's, Renee Montoya's, Batwoman's coming out issues, Northstar's marriage, Punisher turning black, Kyle Rayner's GF being refrigderated, etc...)

-This is where AfroNerd will want to take out Chris Sims in a back alley....

Talk about lowering the boom on a character. Sims really laid the smackdown here....

-Good Luck to one of my favorite webcartoonists, Danielle Corsetto, as she tackles the popular "Adventure Time" cartoon for a BOOM! graphic novel

I can't recommend her Girls With Slingshots webcomic enough....

-I'll end this linkblog with a double helping of Brett White as first he refers to an issue of X-Force I always refer to when folks don't give Cannonball his due...

Take that Xavier and X-Force haters! Then he responds to the Jimmy/Jenny Olsen "switch" in the upcoming Man Of Steel...

That Zach Snyder is certainly kicking the table over in regards of Supes' supporting cast. A Black Perry White... A Female Olsen sidekick...whoa... DC Stoic diehards may be going grey as we speak....

-As usual, right before I send the linkblog in, 3 more items caught my eye. First, Tom Bondurant checks in with what DC's 52 needs....

Interesting indeed...

-Secondly, The Line It Is Drawn Folks at CSBG checks in with their "aft-apocalypse" takes on familiar heroes...

DUDE! The Xum Yukinori "Forgotten Titans/Crisis" piece kicks so much booty, my eyes are watering!

-Lastly, proof that nothing in entertainment is ever, EVER dead...

The J.J. Abrams interstellar takeover has begun! Watch both Star Trek and Star Wars diehards go nuts now....

Until next week AfroNerd Readers, Keep Fantasizing!

Is It Hump Day Already? It's Afronerd's Mid Week Show@7pm! Beyonce Sings! (But Not Really); Atari's Comeback; Quentin Unchained & Daryll B.'s Latest Entry

Never let it be said that The Afronerd Radio Show has a dearth of issues to talk about! Utterly impossible..which begs one to wonder how terrestrial based minstrel programming continues to misinform and disrespect their audiences. But there's hope..listen to Afronerd and Captain Kirk this Wednesday at 7pm as the "Podcast Avengers" unravel the following current event laden topics: the diminution of Black talent continues and it was witnessed at yesterday's Presidential Inauguration-rap artist, Lupe Fiasco gets booted off the stage for anti-Obama lyrics and Beyonce allegedly lip-synced what many perceived to be a credible performance; picking up a topic that was left on the table a few shows back-recent events in Africa have caused the continent to be dubbed the "new Asia" and will Black Americans invest in the motherland before it's too late?; legendary video game company, Atari seeks a new buyer after filing chapter 11; Dr. Cornel West believed President Obama to be "unworthy" of using Dr. Martin Luther King's bible for his swearing in yesterday; five people are shot on MLK Day on MLK Drive in New Orleans!! and lastly, time constraints permitting-why are some folks angry with Quentin Tarantino for using the "n-word" in context at a press conference? Call the hosts live at 646-915-9620!

Is It Hump Day Already? It's Afronerd's Mid Week Show@7pm!

And without further interruption, here's the latest pulp flavored musings from The Shoppe's Daryll B:

Ladies and Gentlemen, Welcome back to my blog. I was feeling good to begin the week but... yeah this is going to take some explaining. So without further adieu....

This was the week I had circled for the last 2 months. Fringe's finale week along with the debuts of Continuum and Lost Girl returning for another season. Call me a sucker... well not more than Manti Te'o but a sucker all the same for thinking that my sci-fi feelings were not going to be ruined but let's start with the good stuff.

Fringe's penultimate episode last week totally set up a balls to the wall finale for this Friday. If you think you had the table set and knew how everything was going to fit into place, Donald/September's actions at the end kicked the table over and only sparked more questions. I know I won't get all my questions answered, and yes that'll bug me but let's see if they could avoid the trap Lost, Battlestar Galactica, and so many other Sci-Fi shows have fallen into and NAIL the landing.

Continuum's premiere was a good start for the show with a very subtle intriguing twist to keep me watching week in week out.... but it doesn't involve the lead time displaced cop or the terrorists she's chasing... As I watched the premiere I kept thinking that this was Timecop meets Seven Days but the twist involving the computer whiz/inventor sidekick is just too delicious for a conspiracy dude like me to ignore. I won't reveal much except if you have seen the episode, I hope you noticed his parents and his notebook after looking at the scene during the bombing of the future "government" council. If this catches on, I am going to enjoy the hell out of Continuum. Comic book fans, this will be the closest we get to Spider-Man 2099 on TV ever! I know, it is a big time tease but I do suggest giving the show a shot.....

Now for the downer news: SyFy is cancelling Alphas! What the f***?!?!?!? Just when I thought that Alphas regained its footing after a slow start then had a fantastic final couple of shows to lead into a third season where anything could possibly happen, the rug has been pulled out. I mean, I guess the realistic X-Factor tone isn't what Sci-Fi fans wanted but to those fans and studio heads I ask what do you want? You killed The 4400 because the powers were "too flashy". You killed Generation X because it looked "too hokey". Now you are killing off Alphas. I am never going to get my live action X-Men substitute for a guaranteed 5 season run ever huh? GRRRRR!

Maybe some links will cheer me up:

OK... maybe not.... what the hell is going on here??? Maybe the next story will help me out...

THANK YOU Stan Lee! Whenever I am down, I can always count on you on raising my spirits and restoring my faith in my art addiction. Excelsior!!!!

-Movie wise: THIS!

I am pumped for RED 2 and the Mirren/Malkovich energy from the first movie will hopefully transfer to the second easily

-Drake Bell can try....

...but GAWD! Please let Season 2 be infinitely better than the first. PLEASE!!!

-Great analysis by David Brothers on 2 of my favorite artists:

...but not the 2 best plot writers ever....

-Let's see what Kevin Bacon has got...

I mean FOX is putting a lot of money behind this... and the commercials/previews have been very intriguing... no way can we have a dud here right? RIGHT?

-Gotta love the Silver Age of Marvel..

Nice touch of the octopus arm in the "SpiderMan No More" picture...

-You knew eventually someone was going to do this in depth:

Marvel NOW! vs DC Nu52... Brian Hibbs hits several thoughts here right on the money but the one that I still have heard many debates over is full on reboot vs a "soft" reboot. It still too early to tell which is better...

-Sonia Harris brings up an interesting comparison:

I can see both sides of this and found both good and ill in the two properties as you folks have heard us debate on the show before. Ultimately it is on the consumer and how much derision they can laugh off....

-Brian Michael Bendis can continue to sell me on his version of Guardians of the Galaxy:

...but I can help but see how he has already glossed over the DnA run/status quo and feeling like I am going to be disrespected just like how he did with Busiek's Avengers....

Finally, someone want to keep an eye on The AfroNerd DBurt?

This may shake up his personal status quo....lol

OK Folks... Fringe's Series Ender awaits me tonight.... so until I blog again valued readers, Keep Fantasizing!

And if the shows aren't enough to satiate your pop culture thirst, check out the latest linkage, courtesy of The Shoppe's Daryll B:

Hello AfroNerds of all ages! Let's rock with some funky links...

- Seriously American Nerds?

With all the problems in the country, you think we could pull off a Death Star project?

- Peter David is the MAN!

Are we sure that he doesn't have some sort of infinite formula running through his veins?

- Ok. This is sincerely f'd up...

Protect your Smurfberries now!

- I find this funny...

Not because of the petition, but because of Hazmat. Why? Waaaaaay back in the beginning of Avengers Academy, she alludes to the trope/stereotype of the black guy getting killed first in action/horror movies.. So what happens in Avengers Arena? The first character killed that we care about is her boyfriend Mettle, a black Hawaiian.... Ouch...

- Tom Bondurant goes over his predictions for 2012 in regards to DC..

Scary how close to the mark he was on these...

- I'd buy the hell out of these...

Come on... who wouldn't want a new Rom book? Or a Dazzler book in the style of Josie and the Pussycats?

- More Superior Spidey thoughts...

You know... that Firestorm allusion isn't too far off the mark....

- Oh God No...

This makes Big Bang Theory look like All in the Family... Seriously... I want Joe Schmo back...

- This is cool...

It's Hump Day & It's Afronerd Radio's Mid Week in Review@7pm Throw in Virgil's appearance in this weekend's Young Justice Invasion and I am feeling great as a Static fan...

- is there anything Brian Wood can't do right now?

He's on an incredible hot streak and might be the new Mark Waid.. (Boy did I put him into big shoes to fill or what?!?)

- Chris Sims does it again...

Personally, I loved Peter David's take on Supergirl and Linda Danvers which eventually led into Fallen Angel...

- Finally David Brothers looks at Django Unchained from a variety of angles:

I think into the next month we'll still be talking about this movie. Quentin Tarantino has struck gold here.....

All of these links and I haven't ever gotten into Fringe... oh man is Friday's finale going to be balls to the wall exciting... I think that's going to be the next blog... so until then readers, Keep Fantasizing!

Double The Fun! Comic Shoppe @6pm & Afronerd Radio@7pm! Peter Parker No More?; CW's Amazon; Kwanzaa, No More? (Acc. to Sen. Glenn Grothman); Slave Films & Daryll B.'s Latest Pulp Posting!

Howdy, fair citizens! It's a new year and we can't afford to slow down or rest on our laurels! Listen to your "Podcast Avengers" (Daryll B., Captain Kirk and Dburt) on The Comic Shoppe starting at 6pm unravel the following topical issues: does the success of Django: Unchained raise the bar for minority (super) heroism as it is depicted in the media or should it?; Spiderman no more? Our thoughts on the infamous 700th issue of The Amazing Spiderman; more news regarding the CW's upcoming Wonder Woman inspired show entitled, Amazon; our thoughts on the Evil Dead reboot and new trailer; Dburt reviews Dynamite Comics' Masks; BBC America releases its latest sc-fi TV trailer, Orphan Black and lastly, IGN.com posits that after the success of 2012's comic book movies, 2013 is going to be an uphill battle. Call the hosts live at 646-915-9620.

And as eventful and "geekly" informative as The Comic Shoppe is, there's still more with Afronerd featuring Captain Kirk airing at 7pm eastern standard. Listen to Captain Kirk and Dburt confabulate on the following issues: is there a grain of truth relating to Wisconsin GOP Senator, Glen Grothman's claim that African-Americans really "don't care about Kwanzaa?" ; continuing where we left off from last week's broadcast (Hitler statue causing a stir in Poland, sperm donor might have to pay child support, etc) ; a recent Daily Beast post posits whether Africa's rising economic outlook makes the continent the "new Asia" and lastly, with Django: Unchained's growing popularity, The Root highlights 12 films that tackled slavery as an entertainment device. The fun begins at 6pm sharp!

Double The Fun! Comic Shoppe @6pm & Afronerd Radio@7pm!

Oh and then there's The Shoppe's Daryll B. and his latest post New Year meanderings...with links!

You ever wake up knowing that you were going to piss a lot of people off? Well AfroNerd Readers, it is going to be that type of blog for me in 3 respects:

First, Dan Slott getting death threats over the "final" Amazing Spider-Man storyline. Now I am not going to say that I agree with some of these nutjobs who take a fictional story WAAAAYYY too seriously. I mean it is ok to feel passion because after all, that is what art is supposed to be about, evoking an emotional response from those who choose to peruse it. However, getting worked up enough to even suggest taking another human life? For those people I suggest taking up another artform because obviously they can't handle reading comics anymore....

With that being said, I know that a lot of Spidey Fans are divided over the events of the issue where Peter Parker is no longer Spider-Man but "Peter Parker" is. I know people who have been in a cave for the last month read that last line and went "What?".... You can read the spoilers everywhere on the net by now so I will not get into it but suffice to say that after reading my blogs here over the past, you ought to know where I am going with this....

I HATE this move with a passion!

I am all about the classic villain vs hero matchups but someone has to explain to me how "creatively" getting rid of one of Spider-Man's greatest villains is going to benefit the character. Heck, the creepy implications involving Aunt May and Mary Jane with "Peter Parker" is going to have me needing a shower after reading this book. Don't misunderstand me though, I want creators to take chances and introduce new-newish ideas to the table to prevent my heroes from getting stale and I appreciate Slott's cahojes, but no.. just no...

Second, I could take the reason why SyFy took the episode of Haven guest starring Laura Vandervoot as a vengeful "trouble" getting some sort of payback at a high school reunion because it fell in the week of the Sandy Hook shootings. But... of course the station took it too far by taking it AND the season ending episode off the next 2 following weeks. Now as a devoted Stephen King and Sci-Fi fan, I took this as a slap in the face. Think about it, you've invested a couple of months into the show hoping for the big payoff storyline wise and SyFy essentially chickened out, leaving Haven fans holding the bag. And these idiots wonder why more people are eschewing weekly viewing for the online torrent? Hell, these are the same folks who show all sort of bad monster/creature movies and they can't handle this?

Lastly, I love Marvel and their handling of the movie franchises but isn't the selections for Guardians of the Galaxy supposed to finalized already? It seems every other day another new candidate for Star-Lord is better brought up or the lineup for the team is being reshuffled. They do know that the movie is supposed to be released in Early 2014 right? I mean, Marvel/Disney is starting to look a lot like Warner Bros/DC and JLA here.... Not a good sign...

To repeat... the dude built a lit up Iron Man Arc Reactor and housed the engagement ring for the girlfriend inside of it. Now that's taking your love to the next level!

- Get Well Soon Peter David!

It is an understatement to sat that Mr. David hasn't been a part in some way of every comic/fantasy franchise that I follow. To me he might be the closest thing comic book fans have to a Quincy Jones. Youngsters do your research on Quincy Jones and his multitude of projects and you'll see why I make that comparison

- O come on! You knew I had to link to a David Brothers Article....

Rest In Peace Keiji Nakazawa!

Happy New Year, folks! What better way to start 2013 by listening to Afronerd featuring Captain Kirk! Listen to the crew, starting this Wednesday at 7pm lower their microphones into the fires of controversy surrounding the following issues: Dburt gives Django a second viewing and waxes on symbolism missed from the first showing: and speaking of Django: Unchained, a Boston Globe film critic likens Samuel L. Jackson's "Stephen" character to modern Black conservatives; a legal sperm donor, who possessed no parental rights, must pay child support in the wake of the breakup between the child's lesbian parents; Sony calls it quits on any further production of Playstation 2 consoles; a statue of a praying Adolph Hitler in the former ghetto of Warsaw, Poland causes outrage and condemnation from many in the Jewish community and lastly, the team will discuss any prior topics that might have fallen through the "cracks."
