What a way to start a Monday! I'm pretty sure every comic book fan and stock investor alike has heard that entertainment conglomerate, Disney just purchased Marvel Entertainment for a cool 4 billion dollars. I'm still in shock and I suspect the jury is still out among comic book/fantasy enthusiasts as to full the implications of this historic merger. Here's an excerpt of some industry "tweets" relating to the merger, courtesy of ComicsAlliance.com:
Many comics pros, including writers and artists at Marvel, have been responding to the news on Twitter. Here's a cross-section of tweets from some of the biggest names in the industry:
jeffparker (Marvel writer, "Agents of Atlas"): shiz, I just woke up working for Disney
CBCebulski (Marvel Editor) Not much more I can say right now. More info coming soon. We're told it's like when Disney bought Pixar... everything Marvel stays as is.
CBCebulski From all I've heard up here these past three hours, Disney merging with Marvel is a VERY GOOD thing for us. Very positive about it all!
ivanbrandon (Writer, "Marvel Comics Presents"): my main concern is that my checks still have spider-man on them. the bank teller won't be so impressed with mickey mouse.
JoeQuesada (Marvel Editor-in-Chief): Everybody take a deep breath, all your favorite comics remain unchanged and Tom Brevoort remains grouchy.
warrenellis (Writer, "Transmetropolitan") so I got this phone call from Joe Quesada and it was just the sound of him rubbing himself with money and now I am confused
So join Max, Daryl and yours truly (tomorrow at 7pm ET sharp) as we round table this earth shattering topic. In addition, we will discuss the following: the return of Batman Beyond...sort of, as limited comic book series; Hancock 2 appears to be in the early development stage; more graphic novel price increase concerns; comic books and fantasy are no longer the sole domain geek males....more women are asserting themselves as fans of the genre; more Spawn news and of course a rehash of our favorite graphic novel reads from last week. Feel free to call in with your thoughts and/or comments at-646-200-0104 or via email/IMemail@example.com. And remember...Make Mine Marvel....er Marvel-Disney!
